Welcome to Azgour Art Group!
Azgour Art Group is an active art community and dynamic learning platform supporting artists – regardless of medium, style, and experience level – to take their paintings to the next level.
Azgour Art group provides a rich educational program of engaging live discussions, professionally edited video demonstrations, relevant content, flexible creative work, an interactive community space, and just the right amount of structure to help artists build and maintain a fruitful art-making practice and to create consistently strong paintings.
The four integrated parts of Azgour Art Group – Creative Work, Class Meetings + Critiques, Forums, and Content – reinforce one another to maximize progress.
CLASS MEETINGS + CRITIQUES
Live Class Meeting are conducted on Zoom twice per month and recorded for easy access.
Critiques – These provide a great learning opportunity. Members can schedule additional Live or Private Critiques to discuss their Projects at any stage from planning to completion.
The main focus of our group is our Creative Work – Projects, Assignments, Exercises, and Challenges. All are optional – set your own pace and repeat as you like. Feel free to post your work in the Forums spaces for peer feedback.
The Creative Work you do is based on your preferred Focus Track.
Projects – A Project is a group of paintings defined by your own scope and pace. You're encouraged to work on these paintings and will have the opportunity to receive instructor and peer feedback by posting your proposal, works in progress, and/or completed paintings in the Forums spaces and/or by scheduling a Critique.
If you’re diving into a Project, the seven-unit structure helps you plan, start, and complete groups of paintings within your own scope and timeline. You reflect on previous works, propose a new project, develop the pieces to completion, evaluate the results, and repeat.
Challenges – Challenges are 28-Day focused practice which engage members with daily creative activity encouraging building a habit of art-making and focusing on the process rather than the results.
Designed to take 5-15 minutes per day, Challenges are a great way to train yourself to focus on getting things done, rather than struggling in pursuit of perfection. Timing yourself on Challenges makes it easier to fit them into your daily routine and puts the focus on quantity and repetition instead of quality and completion. There is no right or wrong way to complete them.
Assignments – Assignments mainly consist on creating experimental paintings with a specific focus. These can be done on small canvases or heavyweight paper. They're designed for to take about 1 hour each. Feel free to post assignments in the Assignments Forums page for the current term for peer feedback.
Exercises – Exercises are mainly focused on short drawing and planning related to the current topic. These are designed to take about 30 minutes each and can be done directly in your sketchbook.
A growing library of Topics, Video Demonstrations, Short Lectures, and External Resources are available to all active members. Creative work aligns to the content in seven repeating Units.
Units – The 4-month course takes you through stages of the painting process, from conception to completion as you formulate your unique proposal and dive in as you like. At the completion of the term, we evaluate and reflect on our progress and then we begin again.
Envisioning our painting process differently through the seven repeating Units.
seven-unit structure facilitates your progress as you plan, develop, and complete
Projects – groups of paintings – of your own scope. Take it at your pace and repeat.
Topics and Video Demos reinforce topics covered in Class Meetings.
Short Lectures – The most important segments from previous Class Meetings are compiled into compact Short Lectures in a growing library of videos, each 20 minutes or less.
External Resources – A carefully curated library of resources on the web – articles, videos, websites, presentations, and books – to facilitate expanded study.
Exhibitions + Guest Artists + Special Events
Members' Exhibitions – Members are invited to submit their completed paintings for our Members' Exhibition, taking place three times per year. This virtual exhibition is hosted on our website and available for view by the public.
Guest Artists – Starting in 2023, we will have Guest Artists who will be invited to speak about their work and/or demonstrate painting processes specific to their work.
Special Events – Starting in 2023, we will host Special Events. For example, we are planning a Members Meetup in April.
I Created Azgour Art Group
We have a wonderful opportunity here. Through the versatile format of the web, we can interact in ways that would be impossible in the traditional studio classroom.
I’ve drawn upon my experience as a professional artist and university lecturer for fifteen years to create Azgour Art Group -- a flexible learning platform and interactive community supporting artists to take their paintings to the next level.
I created Azgour Art Group for two reasons:
first, I love teaching, and second, the online format is ideal for working with
artists. Because of the flexibility, I can focus on creating excellent content
and a wonderful community while members can make use of the resources however
they see fit. This combination has created such a great opportunity and I’m
still ecstatic about what’s possible in the future.
Azgour Art Group is an active art community operating in the form of a membership. Active members have complete access to all content and features.
